    No one cares about random general releases anymore, but hype stuff is still extremely hard to obtain for retail. Which is funny considering resale is no where near what it was.

    This is all about macroeconomic headwinds. Sounds boring, but this has nothing to do with what’s ’on trend’ or any of it. When people have been squeezed by double digit inflation for necessities, like food and rent (and yes, governments all over the world are understating this monetary collapse) people can no longer spend so much money chasing what’s called discretionary consumer goods, like an over-hyped sneaker! If you are aware of this it’s not difficult to predict what will become ‘on trend’, I wouldn’t be surprised to see things like the humble Volley become ‘cool’ because they are a simple, low budget and classic sneaker. I also think work boots, like Redback’s offer great value for money compared to lower quality, higher price brands like Blundstone, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see these out in the wild. Hype dies when wallets are empty, lean times lead to lean fits, to cut a long story short. If you want to be a ‘entrepreneur’ understanding the economic climate you intend to operate in is absolutely vital to being viable, before you even decide what kind of ‘preneur’ you want to run!! The party is over, kids, and for at least a decade. When interest rates stay historically low (and believe it or not they still are) despite inflation it’s called financial repression, it’s a way government’s pay off debts to remain solvent, at everybody’s else’s expense. For mine, being an old head, I never liked seeing sneakers on a secondary market anyway. Fashion should be democratic; call me a dirty socialist if you like but I’ve always believed that, and over the long term offering value will always be more sustainable AND profitable than generating hype.

    "MERCH CAN NEVER DEAD", a T-shirt, is a staple. All humans must wear a T-shirt, that T-shirt can be plain or have something printed on it. Do you see anyone walking around shirtless? A printed t-shirt or a plain t-shirt is an expression of oneself. You can wear a plain pink T-shirt to support Breast Cancer. You can print a trendy Breast Cancer design on that same plain T-shirt. Someone can retail that same printed pink Breast Cancer t-shirt and call it "Merch". In a nutshell, "Merch" is what you make it. It can never die. "Merch" is whatever the creator and consumer decide what it is.

    Merchandise at a concert/event memento will never die, as it exists solely to commemorate and survive the event you attended. However, the trend of off-the-rack merchandise has definitely declined, and all these sade tees are turning into the new softboy staple.

    I definitely feel more than ever I want to wear my older merch with pride. To me if I can work it in with my current style, enjoy it as a memento and show my love for a specific sub culture, all the better. I havent taken my recent Gantz x Sugarpunch x Sabukaru hoodie off, why? Because Gantz isnt well known anymore by the wider audience, even in the anime space. Gantz gets no merch. Gantz was cool and something I enjoyed reading and wearing it I get to hopefully spark someone else to read it or remember their love of it. I appreciate this video Reggie, to say merch is dead to me is downright wrong, like everything its a cycle. These same 'merch is dead' camp folk will be paying 3x the price these shirts originally cost in 15 years when it becomes cool to wear them again, probably with a pair of skinny jeans too.

    You covered most of the factors affecting the resellers and the industry but one factor you did not touch on is the replica market which has gotten so good that some people choose replicas not only because even the trained eye can't tell the difference they're doing it as a giant F U to the greedy resellers who are getting their comeuppance

    I know this is an old video, and I’m just now watching it. I used to be the global design director for Levi’s. The reason Levi’s often work with collectors (one of witch is Ralph Lauren) is two fold. One reason is because levi's was the original jean, though the denim fabric is from France, is that they catered to hard work, mainly farmers and such. Levis were rather expensive. It was common for workers to patch them up, add fabric from another jean beyond repair, and literally wear them for years till they damn near fall apart. So the majority of these jeans were thrown away, or passed down. The second reason is that in 1906 there was an earthquake and fire that destroyed Levi’s company building and factory. Everything was lost. There is a department whose only focus is seeking out historical garments by Levi’s around the world.from collectors to a woman in Texas who found the oldest Levi’s to date in the attic of her family’s farmhouse. And, Yes Levi’s does pay ALLOT to buy back these jeans for the museum on Levi’s campus in SF. And the Vault. Only Levies employees have access to the vault, which Temperature regulated, white gloves only. If you happen to be a hardcore denim head, Ralph Lauren pays $60.00 a year to travel the world hunting down vintage Levi’s

  • @rhithym
    @rhithym 5 днів тому

    My problem with most graphic/merch tees is how it just doesn't fit into many outfits, it becomes the biggest statement piece of what you're wearing. I find that the more subdued or visually simple the graphic is, the more I can incorporate it into different outfits. That isn't to say minimalism is the future, but I think thoughtful design should always trump over the usual overly-stimulating, "slapped-on" designs that every company seems to gravitate toward. For example, a nice, visually appealing logo that's spelled out right at chest level is going to look better than some HUGE graphic that covers the entire length of the front of the shirt, or worse, the front AND back AND sleeves of the shirt.

    • @KevinRoland-ru5eo
      @KevinRoland-ru5eo 5 днів тому

      Hey I like the fact you like to see a more statement piece which reflects the more of a piece that doesn't just splashes a graphic onto the canvas of a shirt just to get views for sales instead of a unique piece that tells a story of the individuals that would enjoy it as a collective garment that's wassup
